CLINIC UPDATES

May is one of the most beautiful months; the sun appears more, it’s warmer and flowers are in full bloom. Another special day in May is Mother’s Day.

Without your mother, you wouldn’t be here today. Your mom should be loved and appreciated every day, but on Mother’s Day, show her some extra love by giving her a gift certificate for chiropractic care at Laurel Mountain Chiropractic Center.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR WORKERS COMPENSATION INJURIES

Were you recently involved in a work injury putting you on light duty or off duty entirely? When a sustaining a work injury, employees must refer to the employer’s primary care provider for further evaluation to determine if they can work or not. Once a diagnosis is confirmed, the employee can choose from a list of health providers.

Most employers have at least one chiropractor on their workers’ compensation panel. If you haven’t been in a work injury, please keep this in mind because far too many people choose the traditional medical approach. This often leads to medication first, without addressing and performing true therapeutic treatment.

In addition to spinal manipulation therapy, chiropractors may also perform therapeutic modalities to help further improve nerve performance and return employees to full-time duty at pre-injury status. At our office, some workers’ compensation injuries may need to be treated with non-surgical spinal decompression therapy depending on the severity of the injury.

When the doctor gives you a treatment plan, try to follow it exactly because it will reeducate the nervous system and repair the body quicker than popping pills or getting injections. If you or someone you know was involved in a work injury, do some research and make an appointment so that you can return to work without limitations.

STRETCH OF THE MONTH

WALL ANGELS

Wall angels are a thoracic postural exercise to help reduce hunched shoulders and a reversed cervical curvature. It also helps stretch the muscles of the shoulder, chest and paraspinals.

Step 1: Start in neutral standing posture leaning against a wall, with the heels of your feet about 3-4 inches from the wall.

Step 2: Lean back against the wall, tucking your pelvis underneath you, bring your head backwards by performing a chin tuck/neck retraction, so the back of your head is touching the wall, but your chin is still horizontal.

Step 3: Bring your arms up to approximately 90 degrees. Slowly raise your arms up the wall, ideally keeping both your elbows and wrists in contact with the wall the entire time you are raising them. Raise your arms as high as you are comfortable.

Step 4: Aim for 3-4 seconds going up the wall, and 3-4 seconds coming down the wall. Repeat 4-5 times or repetitions.

** Please note that this can be a difficult stretch. Try to keep back, head and arms touching the wall. It does take time. If it becomes painful, reduce the frequency of the stretch and work up to more repetitions.
