CLINIC UPDATES

Do you smell love in the air? February is the month for love and giving additional time to your loved one. If you haven’t made your Valentine’s Day plans, hurry up and do so as businesses are quickly filling reservation slots.

Valentine’s Day is on a Friday this year which means we will be closed that day, however, a great tune up before the big day would be to come into the office a day or two before to get a discounted adjustment.

From now until February 21st, we will take $10 off your next adjustment with the valid coupon at the end of this newsletter.

BLOG HIGHLIGHTS

February’s blog defines chiropractic, gives a brief history of how the profession originated and identifies the benefits of chiropractic treatment. Since the start of the chiropractic profession in 1895, chiropractors have been mocked, argued against and ridiculed by the medical profession. The purpose of this blog is to tell current and new patients what chiropractors do and how we can help.

Shoveling Snow Without Pain

This winter has brought some of the most accumulation we have experienced in several years. More snow means that we are outside more frequently, cleaning off driveways and sidewalks, increasing the likelihood of injury due to improper shoveling techniques.

Injury sustained from improper shoveling technique may be caused by:

  • A curved and twisted back
  • Feet are too close together
  •  Unbent hips
  • Twisting or throwing snow over the shoulder

To avoid injury while shoveling snow, follow these recommendations:

  • Bend low at the knees with your hips. Not your back.
  • Have a wide stance.
  • Scoop and lift upward with your knees. Do not lift with your back.
  • Turn sideways without twisting your back. Point your feet in the direction you are throwing and toss the snow.
  • If snow is deeper than one foot, use your shovel as a blade to chop it down before shoveling. This prevents lifting more snow than one can handle.

In addition to following proper shoveling technique, be sure to dress warmly and wear a pair of winter snow boots with proper traction to prevent slipping. Be sure to use a shovel specifically meant for snow. There are ergonomically designed snow shovels to reduce back strain, and they are inexpensive.

Please share this information with your family and friends so that they too can limit injuries.

STRETCH OF THE MONTH

KNEE-TO-CHEST (UNILATERAL OR BILATERAL)

Knee-to-chest exercises help stretch the quadricep and glute muscles, and reduce thigh pain, back pain and sciatica symptoms.

  • STEP 1: Lay on your back with one or both knees bent depending on if you want to do one log or both legs at the same time.
  • STEP 2: Interlock your hands at the knee and press in toward your chest. As you press down with your hands, push your knee away from your chest creating resistance motion and hold for 7-10 seconds.
    • If this is being performed with assistance, have the individual push toward the chest as you resist against them.
  • STEP 3: Relax and repeat

**We recommend doing this stretch with 3-5 sets of 10 repetitions 2-3 times a day. **
