COQ10 & RED YEAST RICE: A NATURAL APPROACH TO LOWERING CHOLESTEROL
Last week, we talked about the benefits of omega-3 and the supplement we have in stock. In this week’s blog, we are going to feature another supplement that helps control cholesterol levels and promotes a healthy cardiovascular system. In addition, it helps neutralize cell damaging free radicals.
What Are Free Radicals?
Free radicals are unstable atoms that are naturally formed during metabolism or by exposure to environmental toxins. Free radicals damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA and cause eventual cell death. Common free radical exposures include industrial chemicals, air pollutants, smoking, processed foods or to much exposure to UVA/UVB rays. Prolonged exposure to free radicals can lead to future complications such as neurodegenerative diseases, heart disease, autoimmune conditions, cancer, etc.
What is COQ10?
COQ10 is an antioxidant that is found naturally in the body and helps convert food into energy. COQ10’s biggest function is to fight free radicals, maintain cell structure, and protect DNA.
As we age, COQ10 naturally found in the heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas depletes. COQ10 is found in foods such as meat, fish and nuts; however, the body may require more COQ10 to function optimally. This is why COQ10 supplements become a necessity.
What is Red Yeast Rice?
Red yeast rice is fermented rice that is produced using a specific species of mold. Red yeast rice contains the compound monacolin K; the same active ingredient found in some prescription cholesterol-lowering medications. Red yeast rice supplements are primarily targeted to lower cholesterol; however, studies show that it can also lower blood glucose, lower triglycerides, and promote positive heart health.
At our office, we get our COQ10, red yeast rice combo supplement from Dee Cee Laboratories, a reputable supplement company in the chiropractic profession. Like any other supplement, these supplements are only meant to aid a condition, not a treatment.
